The annual reforestation campaign in India, which took place on July 11th, mobilized thousands of volunteers to reach the goal of 250 million seedlings planted in Uttar Pradesh.

The most populous state in the country has been struggling to recover forests, which have been degraded in recent years. The planting of seedlings breaks a record every year and has even been included in the Guinness Book.

Volunteers planted the seedlings in forests, farms, schools and along riverbanks and highways.

“We are committed to increasing the forest cover of Uttar Pradesh to more than 15% of the total land area over the next five years,” said state forestry official Manoj Singh.

More forest cover

The campaign was led by government officials, lawmakers and activists in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

And the state's forest cover has increased in recent years.

“There has been an increase of 127 square kilometers in forest cover in Uttar Pradesh compared to 2017,” said a spokesperson for the state government.

greener country

The intention to become a greener country is not new. The Indian government predicts that a third of the country's total area will be covered by forests and trees by 2030.

For the goal to be reached, the government allocated US$ 6.2 billion for planting trees across the country.

However, industrial development and a rapidly growing population still put pressure on the Indian territory.

Planting fruit trees

At the end of last year, the NGO One Tree Planted took action in India and planted 1 million fruit trees. In this case, to help fight hunger in the poorest regions of the country.
