Washington imposes financial sanctions on seven Chinese citizens in Hong Kong

The embargo is a response by Washington to China's repressive actions against Hong Kong

The United States, through the Treasury Department, imposed financial sanctions on seven Chinese citizens, now included in the SDN (Special Designated Nationals) list. The embargo, announced on Friday (16), is Washington's response to China's repressive actions against Hong Kong.

Sanctions prohibit individuals and companies in the US trading with SDNs, under penalty of punishment under US law. It is also prohibited to invest in the shares of sanctioned individuals and companies of which they are shareholders. It is also forbidden to contract debts with US financial institutions with a term exceeding 90 days.

The seven individuals listed by Washington work in a Beijing office that coordinates the Chinese government's actions in Hong Kong. They are: Chen Dong, He Jing, Lu Xinning, Qiu Hong, Tan Tienui, Yang Jianping, and Yin Zonghua.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken alleges that the Chinese government has been working since last year to “systematically undermine” Hong Kong's democratic institutions, delaying elections, disqualifying elected lawmakers and imprisoning thousands for disagreeing with government policies.

“Given Beijing's decisions last year, which stifled the democratic aspirations of people in Hong Kong, we are acting. Today, we send a clear message that the United States stands firmly with the people of Hong Kong,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

national security law

Washington has expressed particular concern about the possible effects that the national security law, imposed by Beijing in 2020, could have on international companies.

Hong Kong's national security law classifies and criminalizes any attempt to “intervene” in local affairs as “subversion, secessionism, terrorism and collusion”. Serious infractions can lead to life imprisonment.

The device came on the heels of a series of protests against Beijing's increasing dominance of Hong Kong. After the transfer of territory the British to China in 1997, the city operated on a more autonomous system, different the rest of the country.
