Latin America seeks a way out of the economic crisis

Fonte EL PAIS

Forecasts of historic recession, declining exports and job destruction put the region against the ropes

In these pandemic months, Héctor Bárcena spent all his savings. The 28-year-old Mexican hairdresser still owes the rent for the months his salon was closed. Her second daughter was born in April, which increased spending. Bárcena, like many Latin Americans, also rents a place to live. His only asset is a car he put up for sale to cover essential expenses for the next few months. "Here we say that the goods are to remedy the ills, so that is the option to move on," he says by telephone the State of Mexico, which surrounds the capital. Bárcena sighs and continues: "It will be difficult for my family, but we have no other option."

Millions of people across Latin America are looking for ways to maintain and survive the economic crisis caused by Covid-19. Some migrated their businesses or jobs to the internet, others left them to sell masks or antibacterial gel. Many depend entirely on remittances sent by their families abroad, while others have fallen into destitution. In a place informality prevails, it is difficult to know for sure how many jobs have already been lost, but the International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that there have been 47 million this year so far. Latin America is the region in the world that has lost the most hours of paid work.
