Russian companies suspected of links to cyber attacks are punished by the US

Washington imposed financial sanctions on companies amid

Amid accusations directed at Moscow of being behind recent cyber attacks against companies and the US government itself, Washington has imposed financial sanctions on six Russian technology companies. The information is the Reuters agency.

"There is reasonable reason to believe, based on specific and articulable facts, that the entities were involved, are involved, or pose a significant risk of being or engaging in activities contrary to national security or US foreign policy interests." says a statement the US Department of Commerce.

With the punishment, people and companies in the US are prohibited doing business with listed companies, under penalty of punishment under US law. It is also prohibited to invest in shares of companies, which are also prevented contracting debts with US financial institutions for a period longer than 90 days.

The United States has increased pressure on Russia amid repeated cyber attacks by Russian hacker groups against Western companies and governments. Russian intelligence services are accused of supporting hacker groups, which Moscow repeatedly denies.

Last week, a White House statement cited the expectation that Moscow would act against the digital invaders. "President Biden underscored the need for Russia to act to stop ransomware groups operating in Russia and emphasized that he is committed to continued involvement in the broader threat posed by ransomware," the text said, citing attacks in which hackers hijack data companies and governments and work rescue by return.

In recent weeks, numerous attacks have taken place around the world. In the biggest one, Russian hackers the REvil group demanded $70 million in bitcoin to restore stolen data hundreds of companies in several countries.

Weeks earlier, at the end of June, the target was Microsoft, which had its system hacked through customer support. Even the two main political parties in the US, the Republican and the Democrat, were targeted for attacks, in July of this year and in 2016, respectively.

In May, Microsoft had already reported attacks by the Nobelium group against 150 government agencies, think tanks, consultants and non-governmental organizations in the US, as well as in more than 20 countries. According to US authorities, the hackers are linked to Russia's SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service).

Microsoft, in turn, says that the group is the same that carried out the sophisticated hacker attack on the software company SolarWinds, in 2017, even reaching the US government.

Between 2015 and 2018, attacks by six Russian hackers caused more than $10 billion in damage worldwide. In addition to harming businesses and power grids in Europe, they are also implicated in identity theft and conspiracy to defraud.

One of the campaigns would have occurred in 2017, when hackers broke into a Ukrainian electricity grid and leaked information to try to interfere in the French elections, the accusations point out.

Danish logistics company Maersk had its entire operation hampered after a network collapse caused by Russian-driven malware. Other companies such as US-based FedEx, a transport and shipping company, and German pharmaceutical company Merck also reported billion-dollar losses after digital systems hacks.

The group is wanted by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations)
